Dean Alex Triantis' Message to Smith EMBA Students
Dear Smith community,
I wanted to share with you this video of Louis (Luye) Yang, who graduated from the Smith School on Monday, May 23 with a degree in marketing analytics, delivering his remarks at commencement. Louis came to the U.S. after completing his undergraduate degree in mathematics and applied mathematics from Fudan University in Shanghai, China. He quickly became an active member of the Smith community. During his tenure as president of the Professional Communications Club, he organized a mock career fair, launched a “Terps Idea” speech contest, and built a strong social media presence. He shares inspiring stories about how his experiences at Smith have enriched him and provided a great starting point for his career.
Louis is one of many students from China who have chosen the Smith School for their graduate studies. There are more than 5,000 Chinese alumni in the Smith family. Our Chinese students have had an incredibly positive impact on our community. They bring a global perspective, love of learning and great enthusiasm to our classrooms. Because they come from many different backgrounds, each student experiences the University of Maryland in a unique and personal way. We treasure this diversity.
But our students are not our only connection to China. Smith has 20 Chinese faculty, many of whom partner with their colleagues at Chinese universities on research projects. Through our partnership with UIBE, we deliver our #9-ranked EMBA program in Beijing. Smith faculty travel to China each month to teach, visit alumni and network with Chinese institutions.
We are proud of our Chinese students and our accomplished Chinese alumni, who are already leading fearlessly in their companies and communities. As Louis said at commencement, “In this beautiful campus, you meet students from all over the world. Despite differences in race, religion and even culture, we share the belief that we will be the fearless leaders of the future." I hope you will join me in wishing Louis and all our 2017 graduates the best upon their commencement. Thank you for being part of this great community.
